Arturo Martini and the Monument for the Palace of Justice in Milan

The exhibition Arturo Martini e il monumento per il Palazzo di Giustizia a Milano (Arturo Martini and the Monument for the Palace of Justice in Milan), organized by FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano, in the rooms of Villa Necchi Campiglio in Milan, is intended to celebrate one of the Italian masters of the 20^th century as well as the memory of Claudia Gian Ferrari, who played a crucial role in our current understanding of the artist.

By focusing on the most representative monumental work by Martini in Milan – the commission to illustrate and celebrate Corporate Justice in an enormous high relief for the Palace of Justice in 1937 – this exhibition, curated by Amedeo Porro in cooperation with Paolo Baldacci and Nico Stringa, offers new insights into his complex relationship with the city of Milan.

The selection offers an unprecedented view of the only three original plaster casts (Corporate Justice as well as the groups of The Intellectuals and The Family) and a fascinating bronze version of The Family group. On display are reproductions of the original photographs taken by the artist himself, that were put together in the volume published by Milione, with a preface by Riccardo Bacchelli.

On the occasion of the exhibition, an itinerary dedicated to Martini is proposed through the city, which includes major public works: the Arengario, the Museo del Novecento, and the Ospedale Maggiore.

Alongside Martini’s works, in the sumptuous rooms of Villa Necchi are displayed early 20^th century Italian masterpieces by artists such as Carrà, de Chirico, de Pisis, Morandi, Sironi, all works generously donated by Claudia Gian Ferrari to FAI before her passing in 2010.
